Mac Miller releases new music – and it’s full of Ariana Grande references

The rapper recently split from the pop singer

Mac Miller and Ariana Grande shocked fans by announcing their split last month.

While their split was said to be amicable, the former couple have since unfollowed each other on social media, and Ariana has branded their relationship as “toxic”.

While the pop singer has moved on with SNL comedian Pete Davidson, Mac has dropped three brand new tracks on Spotify, and the lyrics are definitely about his ex.

We’ve listed the references to Ariana in each song below:

‘BUTTONS’

Yeah, there’s no answer and you call twice
Nobody be at my house
I was at the studio all night

When Ariana and Mac’s split was first announced, the reason behind their break up was said to be their “busy schedules” – which the rapper seems to reference here.

There’s a world gone crazy outside
But let’s pretend that it’s alright
We keep pretending that it’s alright

Following the news of their split, a fan criticised Ariana for breaking up with Mac, but she hit back by saying that she “tried to support his sobriety & prayed for his balance for years”.

Mac could also be referencing Ariana’s hit song ‘Be Alright’ from her Dangerous Woman album.

Days get mixed up
Schedules get switched up
Can’t be in two places at once

These lyrics are, again, another reference to the former couple’s “busy schedules”.

‘SMALL WORLDS’

I know I probably need to do better
F**k whoever
Keep my shit together

In Ariana’s Twitter statement, which we mentioned above, she called out Mac’s “inability to keep his shit together” – which Mac obviously references here.

Yeah, nine times out of ten I get it wrong
That’s why I wrote this song, told myself to hold on
I can feel my fingers slippin’, in a motherfuckin’ instant I’ll be gone
Do you want it all if it’s all mediocre
Staring at the wall and the wall’s full of posters
Lookin’ at my dreams, and who I wanna be
I guess you gotta see it to believe

In this part of the song, Mac seems to acknowledge his downward spiral, and his struggles with addiction.

‘PROGRAMS’

Please do not f**k up my day
Everybody want a headline
I don’t got nothin’ to say
‘Cept I’m comin’ back with the freshness
You know I love makin’ an entrance

Since the news of their split broke, the former couple have consistently been making headlines.

While Ariana has had her say about their relationship on social media, Mac has remained silent – until now.

Yeah, I’m only keepin’ good company
I am not talkin’ to you if you don’t have love for me (yeah)
Yeah, one for you and one for me (yeah, yeah)
I am not talkin’ to you if you don’t have love for me

The chorus on ‘Programs’ then hints at Mac moving on from Ariana.

All three songs, Programs, Buttons, and Small Worlds, are Mac’s first solo tracks in almost three years.
