Kobe Bryant’s family reach settlement in wrongful death lawsuit over helicopter crash

Kobe Bryant’s family have reached a settlement in the wrongful death lawsuit they filed last year, over the helicopter crash that killed him and his daughter Gianna.

In January 2020, the NBA player and his 13-year-old daughter were among nine people who died in a helicopter crash in Los Angeles.

According to PEOPLE, the terms of the settlement agreement have been kept confidential.

Kobe’s wife Vanessa filed a lawsuit against Island Express Helicopters, the company that owned the helicopter involved, in February 2020.

At the time, the 39-year-old claimed the helicopter’s pilot Ara Zobayan, who died in the crash, “failed to properly monitor and assess the weather prior to takeoff.”

She also claimed he “failed to abort the flight when he knew of the cloudy conditions” and “failed to properly and safely operate the helicopter resulting in a crash.”

According to the lawsuit, Zoboyan had previously been cited by the FAA for violating “the visual flight rules minimums by flying into an area of reduced visibility from weather conditions.”

The families of the seven other victims were also named as plaintiffs in the suit.
