Katy Perry reflects on ‘tornado’ marriage with Russell Brand

The former couple split eight years ago

Katy Perry has reflected on her marriage with Russell Brand, comparing the relationship to a “tornado”.

The singer, who is now engaged to Orlando Bloom, was married to the English comedian for just 14 months – before they split eight years ago.

The 35-year-old, who just welcomed her first child, admitted that their relationship came under a lot of “pressure”.

Speaking to 60 Minutes Australia she explained: “I was having great success at 23, 24 and 25, and then I met someone that was interesting and stimulating.”

“It was just like a tornado. It was everything happening once,” she added.

“[I have] always resonated with friction and resistance and challenges. I know that inherently [about myself].

“Like, ‘OK, it’s gonna take a lot of work but oh, we’re gonna get somewhere great,’ or, ‘It’s gonna be a beautiful diamond’. All this pressure is gonna turn into [that].”

Katy described her relationship with Orlando as “healthy frictional”, adding: “It’s very open, very communicate, nothing is swept under the mat.”

“It’s like, we should probably walk into the other room to discuss when we disagree because we’ll do it in public.

“If we can get to the ends of our lives together, we’ll be each other’s greatest teachers. … This is solid. This is, like, the main course.”

Katy and Orlando shared the news of their daughter’s birth with UNICEF last week, the organisation they serve as Goodwill Ambassadors for.

The couple shared a black and white image of their hands alongside their daughters, who they named Daisy Dove Bloom – writing: “We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter.”

Welcome to the world, Daisy Dove Bloom! We are honoured to introduce Goodwill Ambassadors @KatyPerry and @OrlandoBloom’s new bundle of joy.⠀ ⠀ “We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter,” Katy and Orlando told us.⠀ ⠀ “But we know we’re the lucky ones and not everyone can have a birthing experience as peaceful as ours was. Communities around the world are still experiencing a shortage of healthcare workers and every eleven seconds a pregnant woman or newborn dies, mostly from preventable causes. Since COVID-19 many more newborn lives are at risk because of the increased lack of access to water, soap, vaccines and medicines that prevent diseases. As parents to a newborn, this breaks our hearts, as we empathize with struggling parents now more than ever.⠀ ⠀ “As UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors, we know UNICEF is there, on the ground, doing whatever it takes to make sure every expecting mother has access to a trained health worker and access to quality healthcare. In celebration of the heart we know our daughter already has, we have set up a donation page to celebrate DDB’s arrival. By supporting them, you are supporting a safe start to life and reimagining a healthier world for every child. We hope your ♥️ can bloom with generosity.⠀ ⠀ Gratefully-⠀ ⠀ Katy & Orlando.”⠀ ⠀ Please tap the link in our bio to support the most precious gift: a healthy child.
