Johnny Depp has denied throwing a champagne bottle at Amber Heard, as he takes the witness stand for the fourth day of his libel trial against News Group Newspapers.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star has denied being physically abusive towards his ex-wife as he stands trial against The Sun – over a 2018 article which labelled him a “wife beater”.

News Group Newspapers are defending the article’s publication by trying to prove that he was abusive, with today’s proceedings focusing on an alleged attack that took place during Amber’s 30th birthday celebrations.

The 57-year-old was accused of getting angry when Amber confronted him about arriving late to her 30th birthday celebrations.

Sasha Wass QC, representing NGN, claimed he picked up a large bottle of champagne and threw it at Amber, before he allegedly “grabbed Heard by the hair and pushed her to the ground”.

Johnny allegedly then left, leaving a note that read: “Happy F***ing Birthday”.

“You took Amber’s anger about you being late as criticism, and you don’t like criticism,” Sasha Wass suggested, “This provoked you to become angry.”

“And you were, at the time you were angry, near a magnum bottle of champagne.”

She claimed the bottle smashed, missing Amber.

The actor claimed Amber liked to describe him as a “monster”.

“Ms Heard liked the idea that I was the monster,” he claimed, “And if you’ve had an argument, and you try to explain your position in an argument, and things escalate… That for her would become ‘The Monster’.”

“Any time I did not comply or agree with her, it became ‘The Monster’… She used it quite a lot.”

In court yesterday, Johnny claimed that Amber severed his finger by throwing a vodka bottle at him.

The actor denied he was ever violent towards his ex-wife, and has accused her of abusing him during their marriage.
