Jane Fonda reveals she has been raped and was sexually abused as a child

Jane Fonda has revealed that she has been raped and was sexually abused during her childhood.

The iconic actress made the shocking admission during an interview with Brie Larson for The Edit.

“To show you the extent to which a patriarchy takes a toll on females; I’ve been raped, I’ve been sexually abused as a child and I’ve been fired because I wouldn’t sleep with my boss,” Jane said.

The 79-year-old Grace and Frankie star added: “I always thought it was my fault; that I didn’t do or say the right thing.”

Jane is now using her platform to help other victims, explaining that like her, they often blame themselves.

“I know young girls who’ve been raped and didn’t even know it was rape. They think, ‘It must have been because I said ‘no’ the wrong way,’ ” she said.

Speaking up: The actress made the admission to her fellow advocate for sexual violence survivors, Room star Brie Larson | A24

Jane works with the V-Day movement to combat violence against women and founded Jane Fonda Center for Adolescent Reproductive Health in 2001.

Meanwhile Brie played a victim of sexual abuse in Room, and has long been an advocate for survivors of sexual violence.

Jane told her fellow Oscar winner that she wants to help victims “realise that [rape and abuse is] not our fault” through her charity work, adding: “We were violated and it’s not right.”
