Emma Watson explains why she didn’t star in La La Land

Emma Watson has revealed the reason she didn’t star in La La Land.

The Harry Potter star was originally attached to play Mia in the movie, but the role eventually went to Emma Stone who won Best Actress at the Oscars for the part.

Watson explained to SiriusXM’s Town Hall that while there was early talk of her being cast in the film, she realised it wouldn’t work out because she had been committed to Beauty and the Beast for years.

“It’s one of these frustrating things where names get attached to projects very early on as a way to kind of build anticipation or excitement for something that’s coming before anything is really actually agreed or set in stone,” she said.

“[Beauty and the Beast] wasn’t a movie I could just sort of step into. I knew I had horse training, I knew I had dancing, I knew I had three months of singing ahead of me and I knew I had to be in London to really do that.”

Watson added: “This wasn’t a movie I could just kind of parachute into. I knew I had to do the work, and I had to be where I had to be. So, you know, scheduling conflict-wise, it just didn’t work out.”

However the actress is thrilled that La La Land was a hit, explaining, “I’m so thrilled that musicals are so celebrated at the moment! They seem to be back in the zeitgeist and people are kind of celebrating and loving music and singing and dancing again. I thought it was wonderful. It’s lovely.”

Miles Teller was originally cast as the male lead in La La Land, which was written and directed by Damien Chazelle, but Ryan Gosling went on to star in the film.
