Cody Simpson has revealed why his romance with Miley Cyrus came to an end.
The Australian singer and the Hannah Montana star dated for ten months starting in October 2019, before calling it quits in August 2020.
In an interview on the Kyle and Jackie O podcast, Cody offered a new insight into their breakup, and admitted that they were simply headed to very “different places.”
Cody said: “It was kind of a mutual decision between us knowing that we were going in different directions in our life.”
The 25-year-old also revealed that he had high hopes of making it to the Olympics for competitive swimming at the time and was heading back to Australia to practice.
He said: “I had just started training at that point. So, my life was changing and I knew I was going to have to move back to Australia to do it properly and professionally and she was just going into her whole new album, was gonna be going out on tour.”
“It was a fork-in-the-road kind of scenario, really.”
Although Cody did not qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, he is currently training for the 2024 Games in Paris.
Cody added that he very much enjoyed his relationship with the Wrecking Ball singer.
He said: “[It’s] a no hard feelings kind of thing. We were in different places. We had a great, amazing year together and everything. We lived together during all the COVID lockdowns and stuff. We had a lot of fun.”
When asked if Miley ever told him why she and ex-husband Liam Hemsworth split in August 2019, Cody said they never discussed that relationship.
Cody said: “We’d moved on from all the past at that point. But yeah, it just was what it was. Circumstance, really.”
Despite spending a year together, Miley revealed that she wasn’t destined to spend the rest of her life with Cody.
At the time, she said about the split in an Instagram Live video: “Two halves can’t make a whole, and we’re individually just working on ourselves to become the people that we want to be, like everybody else at this age.”
“We’re just deciding who we want to be with our lives, what we want to do with our lives.”
Since then, Miley has been romantically linked in recent months to musician Maxx Morando, who she was spotted kissing in West Hollywood last week.
Maxx was previously the drummer for The Regrettes, but he now plays with the band Liily.
Meanwhile, Cody started dating model Marloes Stevens following his split with Miley, but they have since broken up.
He said in May 2021 that “everything ended fairly amicably” between him and Miley, who knew each other for many years before they developed a romantic relationship.
Cody told 60 Minutes Australia: “We went from kind of being good friends and just having a lot of the same friends to being together for a while.”
Miley also said in August 2020 that she and Cody were “individually working on” themselves.
She added: “Don’t make it some drama story if next week we hang out and we’re getting pizza. We’ve been friends for 10 years, and we’re going to continue to be friends. Just don’t make it something that it is not.”
