Britney Spears files to permanently replace father Jamie as her conservator

Britney Spears has filed to permanently replace her father Jamie as her conservator.

In a petition obtained by Variety on Tuesday, the pop star’s legal team requested that Jodi Montgomery serve as permanent conservator of Britney’s person.

Jodi, who is a professionally licensed conservator, temporarily replaced the singer’s father in that role in September 2019, after he stepped down due to health issues.

The filing reads: “Petitioner has requested the resignation of the current conservator of her person, James P. Spears, who temporarily relinquished his powers effective as of September 9, 2019.”

“The within petition requests his replacement by Jodi Pais Montgomery, who has acted as temporary conservator of her person since that date.”

The petition also notes that Britney “expressly reserves the right to petition for termination of this conservatorship.”

If the request is granted, Jodi would assume permanent conservatorship of the singer’s person, giving her control over Britney’s medical treatment.

The role would also allow Jodi to “restrict and limit visitors by any means”, appoint security guards and other caretakers and prosecute restraining orders if necessary.

The next court hearing regarding Britney’s ongoing legal battle is set to take place on April 27.

Britney was placed under a conservatorship after she suffered an alleged breakdown back in 2008.

A conservatorship is granted to those who are incapable of making decisions, such as people with mental disabilities.

The arrangement put her estate, financial assets, and some personal assets under the control of her father Jamie, and lawyer Andrew Wallet – who resigned from the role early last year.

The singer’s conservatorship has been under review since last year, after she accused her father of forcing her to enter a mental health facility.

In November last year, the songstress tried to have her father removed as her conservator, but her request was denied.

Instead, a judge named wealth management firm the Bessemer Trust as co-conservator of her estate, alongside her father.

Last month, Jamie failed to regain sole control of his daughter’s estate.
