Brandy has revealed that her 18-year-old daughter Sy’rai saved her life while she was battling depression.
The R&B singer spoke candidly to People Magazine about her darkest days, admitting that she contemplated suicide at her lowest point.
“I remember laying in bed super depressed,” she told the publication, “I [told] myself, ‘So, you’re just going to go out like this? That’s wack. You have a daughter.”
“If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for her because this is not the way to leave a mark in her life,” she added.
“If Sy’rai wasn’t here, I wouldn’t be either. The place that I was in, it just felt like I wasn’t going to make it through.”
Early on, she admitted that fame felt like “pure joy”, but she then began to feel trapped by her “perfect” public image.
Opening up about her new album B7, which includes tracks called Borderline and Bye Bipolar, Brandy clarified that she has not been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
She admitted that therapy, meditation, journaling and her faith have got her back on track with her mental health.
“I’m in a place now,” the singer stated, “where I can be proud of moving in the right direction.”
