Aziz Ansari has responded to an allegation of sexual assault.

The 34-year-old has been accused of sexual assault by a 23-year-old woman, who has alleged that the comedian took advantage of her after they went on a date in September 2017.

The woman, known by the pseudonym ‘Grace’, had her story published on Babe.net.

She claims that when they returned to Aziz’s apartment after dinner, he repeatedly tried to initiate sexual activity, despite the fact that she showed clear signs that she was uncomfortable.

Aziz has since responded in a statement released through his representative.

“In September of last year, I met a woman at a party. We exchanged numbers. We texted back and forth and eventually went on a date,” the statement reads. “We went out to dinner and afterwards we ended up engaging in sexual activity, which by all indications was completely consensual.”

“The next day, I got a text from her saying that although ‘it may have seemed OK’, upon further reflection, she felt uncomfortable. It was true that everything did seem OK to me, so when I heard that it was not the case for her, I was surprised and concerned. I took her words to heart and responded privately after taking the time to process what she had said.

“I continue to support the movement that is happening in our culture … It is necessary and long overdue,” he added.

The woman decided to come forward about her encounter with Aziz after he was spotted wearing a Time’s Up pin at the Golden Globes, where he also accepted the award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his show Master of None.
