5 Of The Most Memorable Billboard Music Awards Moments Ever

The Billboard Music Awards are taking place tonight and viewers can expect to see some big performances and even bigger names.

The ceremony first took place in 1990 and has drawn in the best and brightest stars in the music industry come together ever since.

This year, Adele, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, The Chainsmokers, Drake, Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes, Rihanna, Twenty One Pilots and The Weeknd will be battling it out for the Top Artist Award.

Before all the excitement kicks off in Las Vegas, here’s our roundup of some of the best moments in Billboard Music Awards history.

Michael Jackson’s hologram

Michael Jackson passed away in 2009, but five years later he returned to the Billboard Music Awards stage in hologram form.

The King of Pop was shown singing the previously unreleased Slave to the Rhythm and moonwalking alongside a host of dancers.

While the hologram was certainly impressive, it divided audiences, with many thinking it was amazing and others finding it creepy.

Jordin Sparks and John Legend’s Whitney Houston tribute

Whitney Houston won 31 Billboard Music Awards over the years, so it was only fitting that the ceremony paid tribute to the iconic singer after her tragic death.

And Jordin Sparks and John Legend’s performances at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards will go down in history as one of the greatest musical tributes ever.

The American Idol winner performed a moving rendition of I Will Always Love You, while the Oscar winning artist sang The Greatest Love Of All.

When Taylor Swift won big

2015 was the year of Taylor Swift.

The pop star attended the ceremony with then-boyfriend Calvin Harris and members of her famous “squad”, who had appeared in her Bad Blood music video.

Taylor won eight awards during the evening, including the biggest honour of the night – Artist of the Year.

Beyonce and her doppelgangers

Beyonce performed at the Billboard Music Awards in 2011, and people are still talking about that great on-stage moment.

The pop star was joined by dozens of virtual versions of herself, who danced in sync with her to Run The World (Girls).

Beyonce also interacted with other images on the screen behind her to make for a truly memorable performance.

Prince’s medley

Prince delivered an incredible mash-up of two of his hit songs at the Billboard Music Awards in 2013.

The legendary singer was given the Icon Award during the ceremony and performed Let’s Go Crazy and FIXURLIFEU in lieu of an acceptance speech.

Look out for some musical tributes to the Purple Rain hit-maker tonight.
