The 10 Most Memorable Moments From The 2017 Osars

The 2017 Oscars will certainly go down in history after the disaster that saw the wrong Best Picture winner announced.

But there were plenty of other parts of Sunday’s ceremony that we won’t be forgetting any time soon, from the funny to the moving.

Here’s our round up of the most memorable bits from this year’s 89th Academy Awards.

Envelope gate

The embarrassing Best Picture flub left the Oscars audience and viewers in shock, and it’s still not quite clear what happened.

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced La La Land as the winner of the night’s top honour, before producer Justin Horowitz came on stage and revealed Moonlight had actually won the prize.

“There’s a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won best picture. This is not a joke,” he said as the cast and crew of La La Land were on stage accepting the trophies.

Emma Stone’s sweet acceptance speech

Emma Stone graciously thanked her fellow nominees after winning Best Actress for her role in La La Land.

“You were all so extraordinary and I look up to you and I admire you more than I can put into words. It has been the greatest honour of all to stand along with you,” she said to Isabelle Huppert, Meryl Streep, Ruth Negga and Natalie Portman.

Emma also thanked her family, friends, and Ryan Gosling, telling her co-star, “Thank you for making me laugh and for always raising the bar and for being the greatest partner on this crazy adventure.”

Viola Davis breaking down in tears

Viola Davis wiped away tears as she delivered another incredible speech after winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fences.

“You know, there is one place that all the people with the greatest potential are gathered and that’s the graveyard,” she said. “People ask me all the time — what kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola? And I say exhume those bodies. Exhume those stories — the stories of the people who dreamed big and never saw those dreams to fruition, people who fell in love and lost.”

Viola added: “I became an artist and thank God I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life.”

Mahershala Ali making history

Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar after he was named Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight.

The star thanked his teachers as well as the film’s cast and crew, before getting a huge round of applause when he thanked his wife and told the crowd she gave birth to their daughter four days earlier.

“I just wanna thank her for being such a soldier through this process… and really carrying me through it all. Thank you, I really appreciate it. Peace and blessings,” he said.

The reaction to Casey Affleck’s win

Ben Affleck was in tears after his little brother won Best Actor for Manchester by the Sea, but not everyone was so thrilled.

Brie Larson, who presented the prize, didn’t clap or make any effort to hug Casey as she handed over the award, and Chrissy Teigen was seen napping through his speech.

Casey’s nomination didn’t come without controversy, as the actor was sued by two women for sexual harassment and is rumoured to have settled the cases for millions of dollars.

“Overrated” Meryl Streep

Host Jimmy Kimmel couldn’t resist poking fun at Donald Trump describing Meryl Streep as an “overrated” actress.

“Of all the great actors here in Hollywood, one in particular has stood the test of time for her many uninspiring and overrated performances,” he said. “From her mediocre early work in The Deer Hunter and Out of Africa to her underwhelming performances in Kramer v. Kramer and Sophie’s Choice, Meryl Streep has phoned it in for more than 50 films over the course of her career.”

Jimmy got the audience to give Meryl a “totally undeserved” round of applause after adding, “This is her 20th Oscar nomination. Even more amazing considering she wasn’t even in a movie this year, we just wrote her name in out of habit.”

Justin Timberlake’s opening number

Justin Timberlake kicked off the show with a bang, performing his Oscar-nominated song Can’t Stop The Feeling.

The singer and actor had the entire A-list audience on their feet as he belted out the catchy tune before a rendition of Bill Withers’ Lovely Day.

Justin – who lost out in the category to City of Stars from La La Land – went out into the audience and danced with his wife Jessica Biel, as well as Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Halle Berry.

Ben Affleck and guest

Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon have had a mock feud going for more than a decade, and the host kept it well and truly alive during the show.

After a “tribute” to Matt’s film We Bought A Zoo which was really just an excuse to make fun of him, Matt presented on stage with Ben Affleck but was introduced as Ben’s “guest”.

He also had music playing him off while he was trying to present, and Jimmy couldn’t resist teasing him about his flop of a film The Great Wall.

Lion’s Sunny Pawar stealing the show

The most adorable moment of the show definitely came from Sunny Pawar, who played a younger version of Dev Patel’s character in Lion.

Jimmy Kimmel and the eight-year-old recreated the moment from The Lion King when Rafiki holds up Simba, as The Circle of Life played in the background.

Sunny then announced that there would be “Lemonheads and Mike and Ikes” for the crowd to enjoy, before mini candy parachutes fell from the ceiling.

A big surprise for a Hollywood tour bus

Jimmy had a big surprise in store for a group on a Hollywood tour bus, as he brought them into the show when they thought they were simply visiting an exhibition.

The tourists were in complete shock as they walked into the Dolby Theatre and got to meet stars including Ryan Gosling, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Emma Stone and Meryl Streep.

Denzel Washington also pretended to marry an engaged couple – who were capturing the whole surreal moment with the help of their selfie sticks.
