HOW TO: Look wide awake first thing in the morning

Early mornings are the worst, especially if it’s dark outside. What make them even more terrible is the state of your eyes and skin when you wake up.

There’s nothing worse than waking up with more spots than the day before, huge bags under your eyes and tired, grey skin.

Some people are born with amazing skin, the mere mortals amongst us must work hard for good skin. Although it’s tough, working a skincare regime into your regime can be quite therapeutic.

Follow these steps to get the most out of your skin in the morning, and hopefully be able to wear less makeup.

1. Begin your morning routine the night before

When it comes to mornings, prep is key; prep your outfit, your lunch and your skin. The night before use an in-depth cleansing routine, especially if you wear makeup during the day.

It is so important to cleanse your skin well; your skin replenishes itself while you sleep, so you need to give it the best possible canvas to work from.

Take your makeup off with a microfibre cloth like this one from Facehalo, it removes almost all of your makeup with just warm water. It’s also reusable so you won’t be creating much waste.

Follow with a gel cleanser that works for your skin so that it is extra clean and clear.

Next step is to use a clarifying toner; for problem skin we recommend using an astringent like this one from La Roche Posay, it contains salicylic acid which is known to clear out your pores. Get it from Boots for just €14.99.

Massage your serum and moisturiser into the skin and fall asleep soundly, with the knowledge that your skin will be beautiful by morning.

2. Get a top quality pillow case

Pillow cases are definitely something we don’t think about too often, but are the cause to a lot of our skin problems.

Make sure to change the case regularly as whatever hair products you use can seep into the fabric and clog up your skin.

We recommend getting a silk pillow case. They are said to be more gentle on hair and skin, meaning less wrinkles.

Silk doesn’t absorb half the amount of moisture from your skin as cotton does, so you’re keeping all that hydration locked in while you sleep.

This pillow from Debenhams is our favourite and you can get it for just €59.50 while it’s on sale.

3. Morning massage mantra

As soon as you wake up, start sipping the water that you left beside your bed the night before. Drinking water will help keep your skin plump and clear of spots.

The night before put some metal spoons into the freezer, as well as some ice cubes (preferably with added cucumber or aloe vera).

Press the cold spoons against your eyes; the cold metal will instantly de-puff your eyes.

For extra de-puffing, take the ice cubes and massage your face. Start with a cube pressed against either side of the bridge of your nose and sweep the cubes outwards across your cheekbones, pressing gently.

Press the cubes above each eyebrow and draw the cubes down onto your temples, jawline and then neck.

Always draw the cubes away from the centre of the face, so that any retained fluid will be flushed out.

Finish off with your daily skincare routine which should include sunscreen and a brightening eye cream. We adore this one from Origins; it has reflective properties that brighten, and contains caffeine to keep your skin awake.

Get it here for just €29.
