How To Level Up Your Skincare Routine

Want to get your skin looking it’s very best?

With so many products on the market, it can be hard to know where to start when it comes to your skincare.

We’re taking it back to the basics, and have rounded up some top tips to get your skin looking and feeling clean and healthy.

Take a look:

Identify your skin type and skin goals

Before beginning your skincare routine, it is important to understand what you’re working with.

Take a look at your skin and figure out what type of skin you have. Is it oily, dry or combination? Do you have any particular skin conditions, such as acne or dermatitis?

Once you can identify what type of skin you have, you can choose products made specifically for that skin type.

If you need help identifying your skin type, check in with a specialist at a beauty stand in a pharmacy, or make an appointment with a dermatologist.

You should also identify your skin goals.

What is it you’re looking to get out of your skincare routine? Do you want to brighten your skin, prevent breakouts, or maybe improve the feel and texture?

Once you’ve identified your skin goals, you can tailor your skincare routine to help you achieve those goals.

Ditch the makeup wipes

Makeup wipes should be a thing of your past if you’re serious about levelling up your skin care.

Wipes can contain harsh chemicals that throw your skin’s PH off and strip your face of their natural oils.

To remove your makeup, opt for a makeup removing cleanser, a makeup removing balm or an alcohol free micellar water instead.

Add in an SPF

SPF products are an essential part to any skincare routine.

It is important to make sure your skin is protected from the sun’s UV radiation, even in Ireland where we don’t get a whole lot of sun!

Even if it’s cloudy or you’re inside all day, it is important to protect your skin at all times by always using a day cream formulated with a broad-spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher.

Moisturise, cleanse and tone

A good skincare routine will generally consist of a makeup remover and/or a cleanser, a toner, a moisturizer and an SPF of course.

These products can be chosen based on your needs, for example a cleanser for dry skin or an anti-aging moisturizer.

If you’re totally new to skincare, it’s best to add in these essential components before delving into more complicated products such as serums.

Add in a serum

If you’ve got your basics down and are looking to really take your skincare to the next level, it’s time to add in a serum.

There are 100s of serums and ingredients on the market so it can be hard to chose.

To start off, a hyaluronic acid serum is a great addition to your routine. Its main function is to retain water to keep your tissues well lubricated and moist, promoting healthier looking skin.

Retinol is another serum we love. It should only be used on your skin a couple of times a week, ideally at nighttime, and it aids collagen production helping with lines, wrinkles and scarring.

Jade Rollers and Gua Shas

Jade rollers and gua shas exploded in popularity in the past year thanks to beauty gurus raving about them on TikTok.

But the concept of them is anything but new, as they have long been used in Chinese medicine to rejuvenate tired-looking skin and aid in lymphatic drainage.

The tools, usually made of jade or quartz stone, can help reduce puffiness, improve circulation, and smooth wrinkles.

Apply a serum to your face and massage it into your skin using the tools.
