Top tips for dating during Dry January

At the start of each year, many people vow to take part in Dry January as one of their new year’s resolutions.

Some people ditch alcohol for the month in a bid to save money, while others give up booze for health purposes.

So, how can you work Dry January into your dating life?

Dr Caroline West, Bumble’s dating and relationship expert, says: “People often hit the refresh button in January which leads to many taking a break from alcohol after the festive season.”

“For those who want to try dry-dating throughout the month, I would suggest a date at a time or place that isn’t centred around alcohol. A winter walk in the park is a great option or a cosy cafe during mid-morning.”

“Alternatively, you can try something that involves each other’s favourite activities. Getting to know one another through our interests and passions helps to develop a stronger bond without any alcohol being involved.”

“In Ireland, some of the top interest badges on Bumble include: dogs, gigs, cooking and comedy, with 1 in 4 (27%) planning dates around our new hobbies. ”

Bumble, the popular women-first dating app, has found that two thirds (66%) of people in Ireland believe they form stronger, more genuine connections on dates that don’t involve alcohol.

To encourage people to make their attitudes clear from the offset, the Bumble app has a drinking badge that you can add to your profile, allowing people to signpost their drinking behaviour from get go.

The badge gives people the option to state if they drink frequently, socially, are sober, or have never drunk, lessening the need to explain yourself on a first date.

Dry dating was a big trend in 2022, and it looks like it’s here to stay in 2023!
