U2's The Edge becomes first rock star to play in the Sistine Chapel

U2 guitarist The Edge has become the first rock star to ever play in the Sistine Chapel.

The 54-year-old sang four songs on Saturday night at the venue, which he has said is “the most beautiful parish hall in the world”.

Painted by Renaissance master Michelangelo in the 16th century, The Edge said he was shocked when he was invited to perform, admitting he thought band mate Bono would be asked instead.

Thankful: The Edge played some U2 songs

“When they asked me if I wanted to become the first contemporary artist to play in the Sistine Chapel, I didn’t know what to say because usually there’s this other guy who sings,” he said.

Backed by a choir of seven Irish teenagers, and of course wearing his usual black beanie cap, The Edge he played acoustic guitar and sang a cover of Leonard Cohen’s If It Be Your Will, as well as U2’s Yahweh, Ordinary Love and Walk On.
