Star Wars' Mark Hamill on filming in Ireland: 'It was emotional'

Mark Hamill has opened up about his emotional time filming his scenes for Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Skellig Michael in Co. Kerry.

The actor, who plays Luke Skywalker in the sci-fi franchise, said he felt a “wave of emotion” that he wasn’t anticipating while filming on the beautifully raw landscape off the Irish coast.

In an interview with film magazine Empire, Mark compares the feeling to when he was filming in Tunisia and felt like he was in a galaxy “far, far away.”

“It reminded me of when I was in Tunisia on the salt flats. If you could get into your own mind and shut out the crew and look at the horizon, you really felt like you were in a galaxy far, far away,” he said.

“I had the same wave of emotion happen to me when I was on Skellig Michael in Ireland. I wasn’t anticipating it.”

The 64-year-old has remained tight-lipped about the future of Luke Skywalker, but he did mention that, “Obviously you’re seeing him in a very different time in his life. There are lots of surprises in this movie. You’re going to love it.”

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is set for release on December 17.
