Series two of RTE's Rebellion ALREADY in development

RTE have already started work on a second series of Rebellion.

The five part period drama, which begins tonight on RTE One, is set during the 1916 Rising and stars Irish actors Sarah Greene, Charlie Mmurphy and Brian Gleeson.

It has now been reported that a second series is already in development and writer Colin Teevan has prepared scripts for several follow up episodes.

However, while new episodes may have been written, they will only be produced if the first series is a ratings hit.

“Series two is in development but if series one tanks it won’t go any further,” Colin told the Sunday Times.

While TV bosses in America have shown interest in the series, Rebellion producers have struggled to gain the interest of BBC London.

“The Americans have been quick to see it. I imagine it will go out on one of the British channels but it’s interesting they’re more resistant.”

“We felt this story should be told by the two national broadcasters. There’s loads of potential beyond that.”

“Sundance’s involvement, I think, means the rest of the world will be very interested — when one thinks of the Irish diaspora.”

Rebellion is told from the viewpoint of three women played by Sarah Greene,  Charlie Murphy and Ruth Bradley and begins in 1914 in the lead up to the Easter Rising.

The series was directed by Aku Louhimies, a Finn, who had a budget of €4m. It will air on RTE1 at 9.30pm tonight.
