Lenny Abrahamson on Oscar nomination: 'I thought I misheard my name'

After hearing he was nominated for an Oscar, Lenny Abrahamson admitted he thought he had misheard his name.

The film-maker, who is up for Best director at the event, toasted to the film’s award success alongside the movie’s producer Ed Guiney at Element pictures and insisted he’s still in shock.

“I think I’m shock because I honestly did not [expect it],” he said.

“When people said you’re maybe going to get a nomination, I thought ‘little do they know’, I’ve been around it for long enough now, I’ve seen all the predictions, spoken to all the people.

“Nobody was predicting I’d be there, a lot of people thought I’d done a really good job and maybe should be but nobody thought I would be,” he told RTE Ten.

“So when I was watching it at home with my wife on a little computer screen, I honestly thought I had misheard it or something when they announced my name.”

Lenny’s film Room has been nominated for four awards in total and leads the charge for Irish films at the awards.
