Irish animated film Song of the Sea nominated for an Oscar

Irish film Song of the Sea has been nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at this years Academy Awards.

The film, which is due to be released here in March, is up against How To Train Your Dragon 2, Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls and The Of The Princess Of Kaguya.

Song of the Sea is produced by Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon, who previously recieved an Oscar nomination for The Secret of Kells.

And it is directed Tomm Moore, who has previously won the IFTA awards for Rising Star, will find out if he is successful next month.

It stars Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan, David Rawle, Lisa Hannigan, Pat Shortt and Jon Kenny and is based on Irish folklore.

It follows Ben and his little sister Saoirse, the last ‘seal-child’, as they go on a journey to return to their home by the sea.

Tomm described the film as a nostalgic and melancholy musical comedy set before the Celtic Tiger.

He co-wrote the feature with fellow Irish screenwriter Will Collins on a €5.6 million budget.

Chatting to Newstalk about the Oscar nomination, Paul Young of the Cartoon Saloon Studio in Kilkenny said “I’m shaking here, I can’t believe it.”

Adding that director Tomm couldn’t take the anticipation of the nominations so left the studio.

“He went out for a walk. We can’t find him. He sent me a picture of himself down by the river in the park here in Kilkenny. He’s on his way back now delighted, but he couldn’t take it, he left.”

Other Irish stars including Saorise Ronan and Allen Leech are expected to head across to Hollywood for the Oscars ceremony.

Saoirse’s film The Grand Budapest Hotel received a massive nine nominations – the joint most for any film.
