Hozier admits he received open letters from pastors SLAMMING his song

Irish sensation Hozier has revealed he received open letters from Americans about his hit song Take Me To Church.

Although a huge hit in the US, the Wicklow native has had some harsh criticism from pastors in religious orders.

“In America, I’ve never been approached or received hate mail, but I’ve had a few delightful open letters from pastors who have a few choice words to say,” he said.

“But the song isn’t about Baptist or evangelical Christianity, it references more the Catholic church,” he admitted.

Despite the backlash, the soul singer admitted he got no negative feedback from Irish churches.

“I didn’t receive any backlash in Ireland. The message went under the radar until it was in the charts,” he told The Guardian.

Success: Hozier has seen his stardom sky rocket

“It was released the same year as the Murphy report and the Ryan report, so there weren’t too many people who were coming out swinging for the church,” he explained.

The Sedated singer has been making waves in the States climbing the billboard charts and receiving nominations for the Grammy’s and Billboard Awards.

Aside from the criticism, the modest Bray man said he never expected such vast success with his music.

Global: Hozier is popular in America

“I didn’t think Take Me To Church would be a charting or a global or radio hit, so that took me by surprise,

“I thought it would be appreciated by a much smaller audience. So I feel very fortunate,” he admitted.
