Cate Blanchett wants Star Wars role – just to film on Skellig Michael

Cate Blanchett has revealed that she’d love a role in Star Wars – but only if she gets to film on Skellig Michael off the coast of Co. Kerry.

The island, which is an official UNESCO Heritage site, made its blockbuster debut in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and will feature again in the next instalment, but Cate reckons nothing else will be filmed there again – so she wants to get in on the action.

“Isn’t it just the most awe-inspiring place. It’s like something out of a fantasy, out of the minds of the greatest artists. Truly breathtaking. Soaring out of the ocean.

“Star Wars, I suspect, is probably a lot of fun. JJ Abrams is a gifted creator, I’d certainly be game. But it would have to be on Skellig Michael.

“I suspect that may be the only time a crew is allowed to be there,” she told the Irish Sun.

It’s no secret that the Academy Award winner is a huge fan of Ireland, after she spent some time filming in Dublin and Kildare in 2002 for her intense role as murdered crime journalist Veronica Guerin in a film about her life.

Despite spending plenty of time on Irish shores, the actress admitted that she didn’t get to explore Ireland due to her dedication to Veronica Guerin’s memory and the intensity of the role.

“Veronica was incredibly important to me.

“Her story and her fight enveloped me and I wanted to make sure I paid her memory the utmost concentration and respect, which didn’t leave lots of time for sightseeing,” she added.
