Westlife, Boyzone, B*Witched and more: Music's worst BREAK UPS and make ups

Here in Goss HQ we love our bands especially our homegrown chart toppers from boy bands to reality TV groups, girl bands to rock stars.

Recently the biggest band in the world One Direction announced that they will be taking a break from music next year so we take a look back at the biggest Irish bands that broke up and broke our hearts.

It’s not all bad news though because most of our hit makers reformed, reunited and produced new music for our ears.

1. Westlife

From the power ballads to the air grasp, not one person has come to terms with the idea that Westlife are no longer together.

The band formed in 1998 and managed to sell over 50 million records worldwide and got an astounding 14 number one singles.

In 2004 Brian McFadden left the group to pursue a solo career but the band continued to be successful embarking on world tours before going their separate ways in 2012 ending their 14 years with a sold out gig in Croke Park.

Today Shane Filan and Mark Feehily have solo careers while Nicky Byrne is a presenter on 2fm and Kian Egan is a coach on The Voice of Ireland.

2. Boyzone

The original boyband in Ireland was Boyzone, made up of Ronan Keating, Stephen Gately, Shane Lynch, Keith Duffy and Mickey Graham.

The group formed in 1993 with Louis Walsh as their manager and had a string of number one hits in Ireland and the UK before taking a break in 2001.

The band reformed in 2007 but sadly Stephen Gately passed away in 2009 and in 201o the remaining members released an album in his memory and they continued touring up until this year but are currently on a break but Boyzone will never be long apart.

3. The Corrs

The Corrs were a traditional folk band made up of four siblings Andrea, Sharon, Caroline and Jim Corr from Drogheda in Louth who formed in 1990.

They enjoyed worldwide success with five albums and hits such as Runaway, Breathless and Dreams going platinum all across the world before taking a break in 2005.

The hugely popular foursome pursued solo careers with Sharon Corr being a coach on The Voice of Ireland for two series but earlier this year the family announced they were getting back together.

4. The Cranberries

The Cranberries

The Cranberries hailed from Limerick and formed in 1989 and were one of the worlds most successful bands of the 90’s selling over 40 million albums.

Lead by Dolorous O’Riordan, the gourp had such hits as Zombie, Linger and Dreams before taking a break in 2004 but got back together in 2012 and they released an album Roses.

The band aren’t currently together and are all working on separate projects at the moment.

5. Six

The band Six were the result of Ireland’s first reality TV show Popstars in 2002.

The early days of the band was colourful after Nadine Coyle lied about her age to be part of the group only to be kicked out and later become part of Girls Aloud.

The band released Whole Lotta Lovin and it became Ireland’s 3rd best selling single of all time but the band broke up in 2003 and today Emma O’Driscoll is a children’s TV presenter while Liam McKenna works alongside Louis Walsh.

6. B*Witched

One of Ireland’s greatest girl bands were B*Witched who first formed in 1997 and their first single Ces’t la Vie went straight to number one.

In 2003, after selling three million albums, the girls were dropped bu their record company and the Lynch sisters Keavy and Edele went on to form Ms.Lynch.

In 2012, the four some reunited for ITV’s The Big Reunion and in 2014 they released a new single Champagne or Guinness.

7. The Blizzards

Fronted by Bressie, The Blizzards formed in 2004 and in 2005 were signed to Universal Music Ireland.

The band performed at all major festivals and opened for Oasis in Slane and supported Kaiser Chiefs, AC/DC and The Prodigy.

They had chart success with tracks such as Fantasy and Trouble before taking a break in 2009 but Bressie recently told Goss.ie that a reunion may be in the not so distant future.
