8 alternative ways to celebrate St Patrick's Week in Dublin

As St Patrick’s Day approaches don’t only think about banishing snakes or walking in your local parade this year – instead there’s a wealth of different ways to celebrate our national holiday.

With the St Patrick’s Festival starting this Thursday through to Sunday, there’s a number of events to help you bath in your patriotism.

From getting active to whiskey tastings to making music, Goss.ie finds that there’s something to tickle everyone’s fancy this March 17 onwards:

 

1. Aware H2H walk St. Patrick’s Day

St Patrick’s Day isn’t all about drinking so why don’t you kick if off with the Harbour2Harbour walk in aid of Aware.

Staring at 10:30am, fitness fanatics will walk 21km going from Dun Laoghaire to Howth (or visa versa).

The 11th year of the event, revellers need to register on www.aware.ie by 16th March to take part.

 

2. Dynamo at the 3Arena

Aside from parades and shamrocks, why don’t you take a break from the madness of Dublin at the Dynamo show.

Performing at the 3Arena from Wednesday 16 to Sunday 20 March, the British star will capture the audiences attention will his spell-binding magic and illusions.

3. Festival Céilí

Let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be a celebration without a St Patrick’s céilí.

Taking place in Dublin’s Earlsfort Terrace on Friday 18th March, event go-ers are encouraged to meet their fellow dancers at the crossroads for rendition of Siege of Ennis.

Kicking-off at 4:30pm, the event will be armed with céilí caller Jerry O’Reilly and Matt Cunningham Band so get practising the Stack of Barley and Shoe the Donkey from your time you spent your summer in Carna.

 

4. See Dublin by Bike: Easter Rising Cycle Tour

It is a big year in the Irish calendar as we celebrate 100 years since the Easter Rising so there’s no better time to re-educate yourself on the history of the time with a cycling tour.

Taking place over the 17, 18, 19 and 20 March, the See Dublin by Bike: Easter Rising Cycle Tour will take you through some of the main sites of the Rebellion including the GPO, Moore Street, Jacob’s Factory and Dublin Castle.

Starting from midday at Cafe Rothar on Dublin’s Fade Street, the tour is priced at €25 and takes 2 hours.

5.  The Teeling Whiskey Irish Food and Craft Fair

This Saturday Teeling’s Whiskey Distillery will be hosting an exclusive Irish Food and Craft Fair.

The event will showcase popular Irish brands including some of Teeling’s renowned food collaborations and whiskey.

Sure, it wouldn’t be a Paddy’s celebration without some Irish whiskey so head down to the event at the Dublin distillery on Newmarket, Dublin 8 from 11am – 5pm.

6. ROUNDS by BoNs Synth Ensemble

Create your own music this Patrick’s week with multi-instrumentalist, producer and synthesist BoNs Synth Ensemble a.k.a. Glenn P Keating.

Happening at St Patrick’s Cathedral, the event asks audience members to get involved with the commissioned composition for synthesizer specially designed for the concert.

On the night, Glenn will be joined by visual artists, The Shadow Lab, creating an audio visual experience.

7. Stork Afternoon Tea Party

Let’s be honest, St Patrick’s Day was always the time that you were allowed to break your lent as a child.

So continue the lent breaking tradition with Stork’s After Tea Party on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 March with the help of TV3’s The Restaurant pastry chef Louise Lennox.

Going on in Cook’s Academy on South William Street, guests will bake and decorate their own show-stopping pastries and cakes before devouring them in one full breath.

Tickets are available on EventBrite for €10 with all proceeds being donated to Breast Cancer Ireland.

8. The Ultimate Sunday

Round off the week’s celebrations with culture, music, comedy and killer sandwiches, at The Ultimate Sunday in Belvedere House.

The day will see designer Helen Steele, journalist Una Mullally and RTE’s Second Captains’ Ken Early as well as comedians Colm O’Regan and Alison Spittle, to name but a few, come together for a day of chats and banter.
