Saoirse Ronan has opened up about her Oscar nomination.
The 21-year-old has been nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Brooklyn and was in New York when she heard the news and was treated to a rapturous applause.
“Everyone is cheering in here,” she said from the Big Apple’s Greenwich Hotel.

Saoirse explained that the experience of making Brooklyn proved to be an “eye-opener”.
“Before I shot it, I thought this film is my first Irish film and that’s what it is to me,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
“But when we went into it, it took on the role of representing home and homesickness and my relationship with my mom.”
“And then going through all this, I’ve never done this before, it’s been an eye opener.”

The Oscar nominee has no plans to rest on her laurels and is already looking ahead to her next project – a Broadway play.
“It’s a really good time to jump into something like a play. It’s my first one, and I’m absolutely terrified,” she said.
“To go from all this industry stuff — which has been really exciting — but I want to go back and do what I do and get to work.”
