The Music, Fashion and More: 5 Reasons You HAVE To Go And See Sing Street

Sing Street is finally out in cinemas after high anticipation, and I can tell you all the buzz around the movie is worth it.

Written and Directed by John Carney (the man behind Oscar-winning Once), the film follows a young Irish boy creating a school band in a Dublin school.

Set in the 80s, the film is a serious throwback to a funkier Ireland when new music was taking over and the fashion industry followed suit.

Here’s 7 reasons you need to go and see this flick:

1. The Music

Forget about the plot, the characters, the story…it’s worth seeing this movie for the music alone.

Not only does the young band Sing Street come out with some serious tunes, as they learn about music we get to hear the epic songs of the time.

That includes a lot of Duran Duran and the songs featured on Top of The Pops at the time.

2. The Fashion

While a lot of people cringe when they look back at Irish style in the 80s, this film will make you want to grab the leg warmers out.

Oversized jackets, leggins and denim were seriously big at the time, not to mention hoop earings.

And while the cast are draped in denim in pretty much every scene (those denim jackets though), it’s the hair and makeup that makes it even better.

There was definitely a lot of hair spray in 80s, and remember blue eyeshadow?

3. The Cast

There is a stellar cast in Sing Street, showcasing the best of Irish talent.

The lead character Cosmo is played by Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, while his brother is played by Transformers star Jack Reynor, his father is Aidan Gillen, his sister is played by Love/Hate’s Kelly Thornton and his mother is played by Maria Doyle Kennedy.

Not to mention the boys in Cosmo’s school, as well as his band mates, are just brilliant.

It really shows the wealth of talent we have in this country.

4. The Story

I know before the movie even started that the story would be perfect, because John Carney is just a complete genius.

While there’s moments of serious comedy, there’s also some heart ache in there, and it’s all pulled off brilliantly.

Anyone who is a teenager, was a teenager, wishes they still were a teenager will resonate with this film big time.

5. The Nostalgia

You will love Dublin even more after watching Sing Street.

From reminiscing over the classic cars, the original DART to the old TVs, playing vinyl and listening to tape recorders – you will feel like you’ve gone back in time.

It has that Back To The Future feel to it when the band are in their school hall hoping everyone will fall in love with their music.

I fell in love with the music, the nostalgia and the movie in general. An absolute must see!
