This is why you should NOT be conforming to TikTok trends

If you’re spending lots of your downtime scrolling through TikTok, chances are you’ve seen people speaking about how “demure” and “mindful” they are in the last couple of weeks.

But if you’re still a bit confused, a leading psychologist has broken down exactly why trends like this become so popular, as well as the potential negative impacts they can have on us.

Speaking on behalf of Spin Genie, psychologist Dr. Lalitaa Suglani says that people are drawn to social media trends like “demure” because these trends “offer a sense of belonging, identity, and self-expression in a rapidly-evolving world.”

Trends provide a script for how to present oneself, often appealing to those who seek to fit in or find their place within a particular social group.

Following trends allows individuals to feel validated and accepted, especially within social media echo chambers where community reinforcement is strong.

The emphasis on individuals having to embody one adjective may cause them to suppress their true feelings, needs, or opinions in order to fit into the trend. This could contribute to feelings of inauthenticity.

TikTok trends may also pressure individuals to conform and limit self-expression, in the case of the “demure” trend it may even hinder creativity for people for fear of being seen as too bold or attention-seeking.

This can create internal conflict, especially for people whose personalities are more extroverted or expressive.

The “demure” trend, like many trends, may have nuanced impacts depending on individual interpretation and cultural context.

For some, it may be an empowering shift toward inner strength and grace, while for others, it could exacerbate feelings of invisibility.

The key lies in encouraging people to adopt elements of the trend in a way that aligns with their authentic selves rather than as a way to mask their true emotions or desires.
