Tommy Bowe announced as Ciara Doherty’s Ireland AM replacement

Tommy Bowe has been announced as Ciara Doherty’s Ireland AM replacement.

The former Ireland and Ulster rugby star will join the team alongside Alan Hughes, Karen Koster and Glenda Gilson each weekday morning.

Tommy had a three-week stint on the breakfast show over the summer, and is “delighted” to be returning to the gig.

“It is certainly going to be very different alright but I am delighted to get the opportunity to get back on the Ireland AM set,” he said at Virgin Media Television’s Autumn Launch.

“I had a little taster of it where I got to work alongside Alan, Ciara, Karen, Glenda, the whole team, for three weeks and I loved it.

“It was a fun set to be on and it was a fun family to be a part of,” he added.

“You get to talk to really interesting people, from Paul Reid of the HSE to a vet explaining how a cat got coronavirus.

“You cover all aspects of things and I am looking forward to the cookery section more than anything.”

“There were quite a few moments that caught me out [during my stint recently] but we tried to make sure that nobody noticed. So we will keep that to ourselves.

“I played rugby for so long and now I get my kicks from live TV.

“I can’t wear a green jersey and run out on to the Aviva Stadium anymore but live TV certainly gives me that same adrenaline rush, or as Alex Ferguson calls it ‘Squeaky bum time’.”

Tommy is no stranger to television, after he kicked off the travel series in the Cote d’Azur with Vogue Williams back in 2018.

The news comes after Ciara Doherty bid an emotional farewell to Ireland AM as she made her final broadcast on the show on Thursday.

The presenter will take on a new role on Virgin Media’s The Tonight Show, assuming her new position on September 1st.

As people reacted to the news of Tommy’s new role on Twitter, Karen Koster wrote: “Welcome to the team.”
