Strictly Come Dancing season launch ratings hit an all-time low

Strictly Come Dancing’s 2021 season launch night has scored its lowest ever viewing figures.

The popular BBC show returned to our screens on Saturday night, with 15 celebrities taking to the dance floor to show off their moves.

7.2 million people tuned in for the season premiere, a significant drop from 8.6 million viewers last year.

According to The Daily Mail, 9.3million people watched the launch night in 2016, 8.8million tuned in the following year, 8.1million in 2018 and 7.9million in 2019.

A source told the publication: “The ratings are sure to pick up once the live shows start next weekend, and viewers get to see whether the celebs can actually dance – or not.”

Another insider told the Sunday Mirror that good weather over the weekend was to blame for the low ratings, saying: “Lots of people had been out and about enjoying the early autumn sunshine and will probably watch on catch-up.”

Saturday night’s show revealed the official pairings for the 2021 series, with a pro dancer being paired off with a celebrity contestant.

The official couples of the series are Kai Widdrington and AJ Odudu, Nadiya Bychkova and Dan Walker, Katya Jones and Adam Peaty, Karen Hauer and Greg Wise, Graziano Di Prima and Judi Love, Gorka Marquez and Katie McGlynn and Tom Fletcher and Amy Dowden.

Completing the line-up is Nina Wadia and Neil Jones, Rhys Stephenson and Nancy Xu, Robert Webb and Dianne Buswell, Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice, Sara Davies and Aljaž Å korjanec, Tilly Ramsay and Nikita Kuzmin, Ugo Monye and Oti Mabuse and Strictly’s first-ever all-male partnership John Whaite and Johannes Radebe.
