Kin star Yasmin Seky responds to claims the show ‘glamourises’ gangland violence

Kin star Yasmin Seky has responded to claims the show “glamourises” gangland violence.

The RTÉ series follows the lives of a fictional Dublin family embroiled in a gangland war.

Since it premiered last week, the show has received backlash over its violent scenes, and some have claimed it promotes anti-social behaviour.

But Yasmin Seky, who plays Nikita Murphy in the series, has insisted there’s “more to the show than just gangsters”.

“I don’t think it takes a drama for people to look at the glamorous side of that sort of lifestyle,” she told the Irish Mirror.

“There are just people who don’t like watching things about crime and it’s a crime drama, they’re entitled to their opinion. There’s more to the show than just gangsters.”

The series – which also stars Clare Dunne, Aidan Gillen, Ciarán Hinds, Sam Keeley, Emmett Scanlan, and Maria Doyle Kennedy – kicked off with a bang last week, as the first episode ended with teenager Jamie Kinsella being shot dead.

Jamie was caught in the crossfire, as rival gang the Cunningham’s retaliated after Eric Kinsella targeted them in a drive-by shooting.

Yasmin, 23, continued: “As the story goes on and even in the next episode, people are really going to come back from it and realise the characters are mothers, brothers.”

“They’re not only drug dealers and drug dealers wives and girlfriends, there is kind of consequences to the actions.”

Kin continues on Sunday at 9.30pm on RTÉ One.
