Dax Shepard admits he has relapsed after 16 years of sobriety

The actor has revealed he's been battling an opioid addiction

Dax Shepard has admitted he recently relapsed after 16 years of sobriety.

During a candid episode of his Armchair Expert podcast, the actor told listeners he’s been battling an addiction to the opioid painkiller Vicodin over the past few weeks.

Dax said: “I have a tremendous amount of fear about doing this. Maybe some people will feel a sense of betrayal because we preach honesty and I was being dishonest.”

The 45-year-old started taking the pills for pain, after he got into a motorcycle accident last month.

But eventually, Dax knew he was in trouble when he started taking “eight 30s a day”.

Dax explained: “I know that’s an amount that’s going to result in a pretty bad withdrawal. And I start getting really scared, and I’m starting to feel really lonely. And I just have this enormous secret.”

At first, the father-of-two tried to fix the problem by slowly weaning himself off the pills, but it didn’t work.

Dax eventually told his wife Kristen Bell and his podcast cohost Monica Padman what he was going through, and after attending several meetings, he revealed he’s now seven days clean.

“I’ve had a lot of friends that I’ve watched go through this whole cycle, and I finally have the humility to say I will not be any different,” he said.

“I won’t be special. I won’t be smarter. I will be exactly like everyone else.”
