Hozier wins his first American award for Take Me to Church

Hozier has been making waves at home as well as across the pond and now all that hard work has paid off as he won his first US award.

The 25-year-old hitmakers song Take Me to Church was named Alternative Rock Song of the Year at the iHeart Radio Music Awards in Los Angeles.

Accepting the award, Hozier who is currently on his North American tour sent a heartfelt video message sharing his humble beginning and thanking fans for the honour.

“About a year ago, Take Me to Church was posted online with the video and I suppose I remember it was very very humble beginnings.

“The video was done on a shoestring budget but when we released it, within a day I remember getting a message from my friends saying that views were picking up in a big way.

“And I remember staying up all night, watching and the views went up 10,000 an hour which at the time seemed enormous to me.

“But I suppose to see how far this song has gone and the journey over the last year has surpassed all my expectations and surpassed many of my dreams so thank you iHeart Radio for this award, it’s an absolute honour and pleasure,” he told the crowd.

The Bray native has seen his song receive widespread acclaim and numerous celebrity covers over the year, most notably Ed Sheeran.

The singer also recently celebrated selling half a million records of his self-named debut album in US.
