Rihanna drops new track Sledgehammer

Rihanna released her new single Sledgehammer after it appeared in the final Star Trek Beyond trailer today.

The track features Rihanna’s soaring vocals and a slow, powerful beat, in a song that she co-wrote with Sia.

Rihanna teased the song yesterday with a video on her Instagram, featuring Star Trek clips and her face in mysterious alien makeup.

The song will appear on the film’s soundtrack as well, and is currently streaming on TIDAL.

“I’m bracing for the pain and I am letting go / I’m using all my strength to get out of this hole,” Rihanna sings. “I hit a wall, I thought that I would hurt myself/ Oh I was sure, your words would leave me unconscious/ And on the floor I’d be lying cold, lifeless/ But I hit a wall, I hit ‘em all, watch the fall.”

The lyrics reference a tweet she made back in 2014, whens he seemingly began work on the track:

Star Trek Beyond, directed by Justin Lin from Fast and Furious, comes out July 22. It stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, John Cho, the recently deceased Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, and Idris Elba.
