Johnny Depp jokes about ‘assassinating’ Donald Trump

Johnny Depp has come under fire for a joke about killing the President of the United States.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star made the comment while appearing on stage at Glastonbury Festival to introduce a screening of his movie The Libertine at the new Cineramageddon drive-in theatre.

“Can we bring up Trump here?” he asked the crowd of UK festival goers, who responded with boos. “I think he needs help.”

He then said, “This is going to be in the press, and it will be horrible. But I like that you’re all a part of it. When was the last time an actor assassinated a President?”

Johnny added: “I want to clarify. I’m not an actor. I lie for a living. However, it’s been a while. Maybe it’s about time.”

The 54-year-old’s question was referring to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865 by actor John Wilkes Booth.

The White House has responded to Johnny’s comments, sharing in a statement, “President Trump has condemned violence in all forms and it’s sad that others like Johnny Depp have not followed his lead.

“I hope that some of Mr. Depp’s colleagues will speak out against this type of rhetoric as strongly as they would if his comments were directed to a Democrat elected official.”
