WATCH: Claire Foy holds back tears as she accepts Best Actress Emmy for The Crown

The actress dedicated her award to her co-star Matt Smith

Claire Foy held back tears as she won her first ever Emmy Award on Monday night.

The 34-year-old accepted the award for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown.

Claire was clearly surprised by her win, as she started her speech by saying: “This wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Fighting back tears, the actress continued: “I was given a role that I never thought I’d get a chance to play. I just felt so proud then of being in the company of such extraordinary performers.”

“Listen, thank you Emmys. I had the most extraordinary two and a half years on this programme. I was given a role that I never thought I’d get a chance to play and I met people who I will love forever, and ever and ever.”

“And the show goes on, which makes me so so proud. So I dedicate this to the next cast, the next generation. And I also dedicate this to Matt Smith,” she added.

The actress’ win comes just a few months after she was involved in a gender pay gap controversy, after it was revealed that her co-star Matt Smith was paid more than her.

Olivia Colman has taken over the role of Queen Elizabeth for the third series of the The Crown, alongside Tobias Menzies (who will play Prince Philip), and Helena Bonham Carter (who will play Princess Margaret).
