Meghan Markle held back tears during an emotional Anzac Day dawn service, which she attended with her fiancé Prince Harry.

Prince Harry was there to honour New Zealand and Australia’s war dead, and his bride-to-be looked sombre as they sang the hymn Abide With Me.

Anzac Day, April 25, is the anniversary of the start of the First World War Gallipoli landings, and is a national day of remembrance for Australia and New Zealand.

During the service, the Prince, who served for 10 years in the forces, layed a wreath at a metal cross near Wellington Arch in central London.

According to the Press Association, a handwritten note was attached to the wreath which read, “For all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of our freedom. Thank you. Harry.”

The couple were welcomed by Te Ataraiti Waretini from Ngati Ranana, the London Maori Club, with a traditional hongi.

A haka was also performed at the end of the service, a longer version of the one performed by the New Zealand All Blacks before rugby matches.

Speaking about meeting Meghan, Te Ataraiti said, “She was amazing. I’m not sure if it’s her first time at a Maori ceremony but she did very very well.”

“It was really lovely to meet her and share the breath of life and share our culture with her and Harry.”

After the service, Prince Harry and Meghan walked to the Australian war memorial where he laid another floral tribute.
