Ovie Soko has opened up about his motivations to enter this season of Love Island.
The professional basketball player told The Guardian’s lifestyle magazine G2 that he made the decision to enter the show after his close friend passed away suddenly.
He described how the loss made him re-evaluate his thoughts and goals.
“That year, I did a lot of thinking; there was a long time to collect my thoughts and reassess everything,” he said.
It was then that his brother suggested he apply for the show – and the rest is history.
Ovie also described how he felt a sense of responsibility to be a positive role model to your black people, and show the public that they best person to be is yourself.
“Being a young black man is something in life that’s on your mind’, he explained.
“It’s important to young black people to know that they can be themselves and you don’t have to fit into a specific mould to be one on TV.”
“If there’s one thing I hope it did show, it’s that being you is dope.”
