Zara Holland competed in the 2016 series of Love Island and has likened life in the villa to being in a “posh prison.”
Speaking out to the BBC she revealed the Islanders were told what to wear, when to eat and even when to sleep.
“You have to [wear make-up]. You’re not really allowed to wear a swimming costume as such.”
“You have to get ready and do your hair and make-up.”
“It was so controlled in there that you go told when to go to bed, when to wake up, when dinner was,” she said.
According to her, two producers lived in the villa with the contestants and told them to have certain conversations with specific people about certain topics.
“They would ask how you’re feeling, who you think are the best couples, and then they might say to you, ‘Right Zara, now can you go and sit by the pool, we’re going to send so and so over and this is what we want you to talk about.”
I’m beyond heartbroken, I’m in shock. My gorgeous friend, why. 😢😭 you will be truly missed, I will think about you every single day. The nicest, kindest, caring, hard working girl I have ever met. Such a beautiful soul. When we did our talk together only a few weeks ago in Leeds, I was so proud of you. Oh Sophie please come back, I love you so much. You will always be my shining star. Sending all my love to your family. 😓😓😓 Sleep tight baby girl. X
While on the show, she slept with Alex Bowen in The Hideaway.
Her Miss Great Britain title was stripped from her as a result.
She sought professional help from a psychiatrist at the beginning of the year and is now on anti-depressants having struggled with life after the show.
Speaking about her mental health after the “I was just not the same girl that I was. I would be so upset all the time, I would be tired.”
“It was really hard, really hard. Like, I would really torture myself sometimes.”
“I would go searching for those negative comments.”
I can’t stop thinking about you my gorgeous girl Sophie ❤ I’m truly heartbroken and I will never ever forget you. You have so much love my darling. RIP now, I’ll remember all the amazing times we had together, even so recently. You are truly an amazing girl. Words can’t describe how I’m feeling. You where my big sister in that villa and stuck by me always. Night night angel. #Iloveyou
A spokesperson for ITV said, “All of our islanders are offered psychological support before, during and after their time in the villa.”
“We take our duty of care very seriously and this is always our top priority.”
