The Vampire Diaries cast bid farewell to the show after HEARTBREAKING series finale

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers about Friday night’s Vampire Diaries series finale.

The Vampire Diaries has officially come to an end after eight years, and left many fans in tears in the process.

The cast of the show penned emotional farewells to the series after the final ever episode aired on Friday night.

Nina Dobrev returned for the heartbreaking series finale, in which Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) sacrificed himself to kill Katherine Pierce (played by Dobrev) and save Mystic Falls.

Meanwhile Elena (Dobrev) was finally reunited with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to spend their lives together.

The episode ended with them each shown embracing family members that they’d lost, including Elena’s parents and Stefan.

Nina shared several photos to Instagram after the finale, including ones with her “family”, aka Ian and Paul, the show’s creators and her close friend Zach Roerig.

The actress, who originally left the show after season six, also shared lots of snapshots with her female co-stars.

We started out as fetuses. Now we are women,” she wrote. “The trips, adventures, and laughter I have shared with these beautiful souls makes me tear with joy. I love them more than I could ever explain or begin to put into words.”

Ian shared a photo of himself on Instagram, writing, “Wow saying good bye to 8 years… wow. Thank you all! Watching the Finale right now! Thank you #tvd fans around the world.”

Paul posted pictures with Nina and Ian before the episode aired, and Kat Graham (Bonnie) posted fan art of her character with the words, “The end is near…

“Thank you to all the beautiful fans for your support during the 8 years of #thevampirediaries. Watch the series finale tonight at 9 on @thecw Goodbye Bonnie Bennett…”
