RTE's Stephen Byrne was down to final three to play stormtrooper in Star Wars

RTE star Stephen Byrne has revealed he was down to the final three to get a lead role in Star Wars.

The Two Tube presenter lost out to Hollywood actor John Boyega, who is understood to play a stormtrooper who goes AWOL.

And Stephen – who would have been starring with Domhnall Gleeson – said it was tough to lose.

He said: “Earlier in the year I went through the Star Wars auditions – which is the weirdest thing in the world and forget it even happened sometimes.

Lost out: John got role he was up for

“I did about four months of auditions but didn’t get it. That guy from Attack The Block [John Boyega] was up for it too and got it.

“It was tough when I didn’t get it initially, but when the photo of the cast came out, I was like, ‘That’s not me!’.

“But it was still a great vote of confidence and I’m still talking to agents and so on.”

But Stephen insists he has no plans to go to America now to follow the dream, insisting: “I wouldn’t move over permanently”.

However the RTE star does hope of getting his own Jimmy Fallon-esque show.

He added: “The ultimate goal would be something like Jimmy Fallon – a late night talk show that has sketches and comedy wrapped into it.

“Whether that’s Stateside or not, we’ll have to see. It would be nice to get something like that over here though, there’s definitely a gap for it.”
