Rory Cowan: ‘My father never knew I was gay’

Rory Cowan has revealed that his late father never knew he was gay.

The Mrs. Brown’s Boys star lost his father eight years ago – before he rose to fame playing Agnes Brown’s son, Rory.

“My father was totally oblivious,” he admitted.

The actor said that because of his father’s religion, he never came out – but his mother knew of his sexuality.

“He was very religious so I never came out to my father,” he told the Star.

“My mam knew but I never said it to my mam either. She just knew.”

Rory also admitted that he never told his mother directly he was gay, because he knew she’d had to say it to his father.

“She never spoke to me about girlfriends – always friends. But I never said it to her because she then would’ve had to say it to my father,” he added.

“And I was sharing an apartment with a girl at one stage and he thought I should’ve made an honest woman out of her.”

Rory’s co-star Brendan O’Carroll recently spoke out about the harsh criticism that their show received when it was announced as the Best British Sitcom of the Century.
