The Crown’s Claire Foy was paid less than her co-star Matt Smith, it has been revealed.

Claire played the lead role of Queen Elizabeth in the hit Netflix series, while Matt played her on-screen husband, Prince Phillip, otherwise known as the Duke of Edinburgh.

Despite the fact that Claire played the lead and won a Golden Globe for her performance, she was paid less than her male co-star – due to Matt Smith’s Dr Who fame.

Claire, 33, was reportedly paid $40,000 (£28,000) per episode for the first two series, which followed Queen Elizabeth during the 1950s and 1960s.

Speaking at a television industry conference in Jerusalem, The Crown co-producer Suzanne Mackie insisted that the pay difference would be rectified.

“Going forward, no-one gets paid more than the Queen,” she said, according to Variety.

For the show’s third series, which will move into the 1970s, Olivia Colman will replace Claire as Queen Elizabeth. Prince Philip will also be played by a different actor.

Since the news of the pay disparity between Claire and Matt broke, many fans of The Crown has taken to social media to express their anger.
