Love/Hate's Tom Vaughan Lawlor: 'Living in England means I don't have to WORRY about fame'

Love/Hate star Tom Vaughan Lawlor has revealed he loves living in England – as he doesn’t have to “worry” about his fame.

The RTE actor – who plays Nidge in the gangland series – is one of the most famous people in Ireland due to his role.

But Tom, who admits he misses Ireland, does enjoy being able to “walk about very freely” in the UK without the pain of being hassled by punters.

He said: “I have a very strange existent where I can walk about very freely in England and not worry, and then I get a plane home and I land and there’s a lot of attention.

“I miss Ireland terribly. I do a lot of work here and I go back and forth, but I do miss it terribly.”

Speaking on Sunday With Miriam which airs tomorrow, Tom also tells of how he doesn’t want to raise his three-year-old son Freddie as being too Irish.

He said he makes sure not to force Irishness on the youngster, ensuring he doesn’t grow up with resentment towards where he lives.

He added: “I do bring him back but it’s the funny thing, he’s got his Irish rugby jersey and runs about in his Irish rugby jersey.

“But it’s that funny thing where you hear his English accent and go, ‘My son has an English accent!’

“What’s interesting is you have to be careful about fostering or making him very, very intensely aware of his Irish heritage because that can cause a certain degree of cultural confusion.”

I know he’ll have great pride in his Irish heritage, but equally you don’t want him have a split cultural relationship with both countries where he feels torn between the two.
