Karl Broderick claims RTE 'revved up' the Late Late Eurovision row

Karl Broderick has claimed that RTE were to blame for the Late Late Eurovision row.

Viewers were shocked at home as Aslan’s Billy McGuinness attacked the show as a “fix” claiming that Louis Walsh was behind Eoghan Quigg’s entry.

But Karl – who wrote The Movie Song for X Factor star Eoghan – said that he feels RTE wanted to push the row for ratings.

He said: “I do think – maybe for ratings wise – that RTE did rev it up a little bit.”

And Karl, who is married to TV3 star Alan Hughes, revealed that they even considered pulling out after Billy first made the claims.

Annoyed: Karl was told people weren’t voting for them anymore | VIPIreland.com

He told Mooney that Mark Murphy, the song’s mentor, said they would have to pull out because “even if we won it would be seen as a fix” and was annoyed the attack did hurt them

He added: “I actually tried to think it didn’t influence the outcome, then on the night of Eurovision itself, just watched Facebook I saw so many people giving out.

“They were saying, ‘The whole Eurosong is a fix’ and making out that I was in some kind of click with RTE for even being the competition and that Louis had got me in that competition.

“And you go, ‘Oh my God’. None of it’s true, and I was very upset. Because that day in RTE, we had to perform that night. And myself and Eoin were getting texts from people and Facebook messages and Tweets.

“They were saying, ‘We were going to vote for you on the merit of the song – and we’re not now.’ I just think Billy was actually wrong.”
