Interview! Love/Hate's Mary Murray: 'People think we're millionaires'

She’s back – quite literally – with a bang in the new season of Love/Hate.

But Mary Murray, who plays prostitute Janet in the show, revealed her role in the RTE show hasn’t boosted her bank balance.

She told Goss.ie: “People think we’re think we’re millionaires, but it’s just another a job which is great for the actors. It’s such an expensive show to put on.”

And the 35-year-old revealed she didn’t know if she’d return to the show until weeks before shooting – fearing the indignity of being killed off in between seasons.

“I didn’t know my character was going to return until a week or two beforehand. It was very close to the wire. We didn’t know what was going on,” Mary told Goss.ie.

“You never know how long they’re going to keep you on the show, people get killed off all the time.”

Earlier this week, Siobhan Loughnane – who used to play Debbie in the show – admitted she hated the fact it was such a “sausage-fest”.

But Mary is delighted that things are finally changing for Love/Hate, adding: “I’m happy that women are getting bigger roles in the show – it’s great.”

And the Dublin actress also revealed she doesn’t get recognized too easily, even though she’s in the biggest show in the country.

“Lots of people don’t know me because I don’t look so much like Janet bit it’s generally after I speak for a moment or two they start to recognize the voice,” she said.

“And they look at me, you give them a few minutes and they eventually ask the question.”

Speaking about the show’s return, the Dublin actress couldn’t hide her excitement at it finally being back.

She said: “It’s back with a vengeance. I’m really excited, like the rest of the nation, especially considering they’ve only said in the last two weeks when it’s going to be on, so now it’s just a big blast and it’s great, it’s all very exciting.”

And Mary revealed we’ll see alot more of Janet’s life this season.

“Janet has a big domestic story this year, we get to see a lot of her family life. We got to see Janet as the individual who gave Nidge a bit of a break from family life before,” she said.

“But now it seems like he’s gone from the fire pan into the fire because he’s just ended up with another family and another situation to deal with.”

“Janet is kind of looking to Nidge for guidance for her son Aaron and hoping that he can be a bit of a father figure, he needs a father figure in his life and who better then Nidge.”
