Gay Byrne vows to continue working – as he turns 80 today

RTE legend Gay Byrne has vowed not to retire – as he turns the big 8-0 today.

The former Late Late Show host has promised to continue working on his Lyric FM show and his one-man show across the country.

He said: “I have no plans to retire. I’ll be back on air at Lyric FM in the autumn.

“Then there’s the one man show, Kathleen is helping me out with that. I have no intention of taking any break.”

The Montrose star is celebrating his 80th birthday with wife Kathleen Watkins and family and friends in Donegal.

But Gay revealed that his daughters have left him in the dark on exactly what is happening.

“My daughters have arranged a get-together of friends and family,” he told the Sun.

“I don’t know all the details — it’s top secret — but it should be a great day.”
