RTE star Gay Byrne has said UTV Ireland could destroy rival station TV3 when they launch in January.
The former Late Late Show host said he didn’t understand the station’s move to Ireland, but believes they will take viewers from TV3.
“I don’t know why they are coming into the Republic,” he said.
“But they are and now they are talking about doing a daily show and a news show and a Pat Kenny Show and a this show and a that show.”

“I think they will damage TV3 rather than RTE. But it’s going to be a very crowded and different market.”
Speaking to press Gay said he hadn’t been approached to join the station.
“They haven’t approached me. I’m yesterday’s person, an old man of 80 years of age.
“I’m old and grey and grumpy and bad tempered and I’m losing my wits bit by bit and they haven’t approached me.”
