EXCLUSIVE: Aidan Gillen DOESN'T share Love/Hate creator's regret over John Boy killing

By: Samuel Hamilton

Former Love/Hate star Aidan Gillen has admitted he doesn’t share the show creator’s regrets that he was killed off from the show.

The RTE show’s writer Stuart Carolan has said he was a “half-wit” for giving the star’s character – John Boy – the chop from the show.

But Aidan told Goss.ie that he is glad to have been written out of the series at the start of 2012 when the gang boss was murdered with two shots to the head.

And the 46-year-old said that he was happy to escape the intense attention that came with the show exploding in possibility after he was axed.

Asked if he shared Carolan’s regrets, Aidan told Goss.ie: “I had another job to go to, and I’m glad that I was in and out of that in that time.

“Because it became such a thing that it would have been too much for me.”

Previously Stuart said that “in some way I think I’m a half-wit for killing off Aiden Gillen,” adding again recently that he still regrets it.

Now Aidan is teaming up again with Tom Vaughan-Lawlor on new drama Charlie – where he plays ex-Taoiseach Charlie Haughty – and told Goss.ie it was great to reunite.

But the Wire actor insisted that he doesn’t feel like Nidge in a suit playing PJ O’Mara.

He added: “Tom doesn’t sound a bit Nidgey… but PJ O’Mara was from Drumcondra so he was always going to sound a little bit like him.”

However Aidan insisted despite the horrors of both Charlie and John Boy he won’t compare the two.

He said: “I don’t make any connection between John Boy and Charlie Haughy, I’m not going to.”
