Charlene McKenna reveals anger after BBC axed Ripper Street

Ripper Street star Charlene McKenna has told of her anger at the BBC initially axing the show.

The TV series – which is filmed in Dublin – wasn’t going to be renewed until Amazon stepped in and funded the programme.

And Charlene, 30, admits that the uncertainty made the whole cast appreciate the show much more.

“It’s brilliant to back filming, I’m really enjoying how my character Rose is developing and I think the third series is fantastic,” she said.

“The whole rift and hoo-ha over whether or not it was going to be brought back made everyone in the cast fully appreciate how much we all loved it and that’s given filming a new energy.

“It was definitely a big mistake but it will be back on the BBC thankfully.”

But now Charlene is leaving Ireland to move to New York before her Broadway theatre debut next March to star in Richard Eyre’s version of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts.

“I was doing the show in the West End before Ripper Street started filming again and now we are transferring to New York in the spring,” she told the Herald.

“I can’t wait, its amazing as I was planning to move there anyway so the play coming over too is a big help.”
