Carol Vorderman revealed to Today FM’s Dermot & Dave that she was paid three times more than Richard Whiteley.
The pay imbalance led to an argument between the presenters. She told the radio presenters, “It was the only heated debate Richard and I ever had.”
Vorderman co-hosted the show for over a quarter of a century with Richard Whiteley.
After Richard’s death she knew it was time to move on, “I left after 26 years, I’m a great believer in new chapters, it was like a marriage and it was a massive part in my life, but I didn’t want to be sort of, hanging around.”
She also remarked that it was brilliant to see how women’s experiences in TV were changing but was hesitant to elaborate on whether or not she believes there is a long way to go to narrow the gender pay gap.
The 57-year-old said to Dermot and Dave, “Ok I’m going to give you an exclusive here how, I can’t get involved in that because the only heated debate Richard and I ever had was when he found out that I was being paid three times more than him.”
Carol added, “The whole gender pay gap thing is not necessarily men versus women, there’s a lot of women against women. Trolling on Twitter – it’s not men having a go at women it’s often women having a go at women, which I kind of think, ‘Where’s the sisterhood gone?’ I’m glad it’s being discussed though and it is out in the open now.”
